Dr Hüdai Kara, Founder and Managing Director of Metsims Sustainability Consulting, has more than 20 years of professional experience, primarily in the United Kingdom, across industries ranging from metals and materials to chemicals, textiles, and energy. His areas of expertise include climate change strategies, carbon and energy management, low-carbon and sustainable technologies, life cycle assessment, renewable energy, waste management, and research and development.
As a materials scientist, Dr Kara has contributed to the preparation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for more than 300 products through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies. He has also supported companies in identifying climate change risks associated with their organisations and products through carbon footprint assessments.
Dr Kara previously served as Chair of the Technical Committee of the International EPD System and remains a member of the committee. He is also a founding member of the European ECO Platform. In recognition of his international expertise in LCA and EPD, he was appointed as an EPD Verifier for the International EPD System, EPD Australasia, and the ZAG EPD Programme, becoming the first and only expert from Türkiye to hold these appointments.
He has extensive expertise and practical experience in developing LCA and EPD databases for construction materials, including TurCoMDat and UKCoMDat. Dr Kara also serves as Project Director for the establishment and development of the Türkiye Sustainability Code ESG reporting framework and as Project Manager of the Türkiye Life Cycle Inventory Database (TLCID), which evaluates the environmental performance of products manufactured in Türkiye and is expected to provide important infrastructure for the implementation of the European Green Deal.
Dr Kara regularly acts as an evaluator for project applications submitted under European Union research and development framework programmes, including Horizon 2020, the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7 NMP and Environment), Eureka, Eurostars, and Eco-Innovation.
He has authored 20 articles published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, which have received more than 1,250 citations in total. His academic metrics include an h-index of 14 and an i10-index of 16.
Dr Hüdai Kara holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Oxford.
