UNMAŞ, which was founded in 1990 by the DORUK Group and is a leading company in the flour and wheat industry, has released its 2020 sustainability report with the sustainability consultancy services of Metsims. In this study, UNO has reported their work on the problems the Earth is facing by taking several actions; such as waste management activities, root optimization studies, bio-degradable packaging solutions, and measuring their impact on climate change.
UNO aims to decrease the total use of all plastic, cardboard and paper materials by 10 percent. Within the scope of their “Eat Well, Protect the World” project they have developed a new plastic packaging alternative which is oxo-biodegradable and water-soluble, meaning it completely disappears in nature in 18-to-24 months, and this project has helped 100.2 tonnes of plastic to be degraded in 24 months. The alternative plastic packaging can also be used as a fertilizer because of its non-toxic characteristics that increase agricultural productivity of soil.
Additionally, UNO manages its waste via their environmental management system in accordance with national and international standards, while measuring their waste output regularly. Furthermore, UNO tries to decrease the waste at its source with projects aiming to decrease bread waste -and prevented the waste of 1510 tons of bread- while also giving employees recycling and reuse awareness trainings.
UNMAŞ sees this report as a concrete step in their sustainability quest, which also includes their activies on energy efficiency, corporate carbon footprint, route optimization and their work on 8 of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
